Emily came under a real curse (without knowing at first) because of a good luck idol from Thailand. When she realized she had dishonored God by bringing it into her home and participating in the luck ritual, she broke the statue on the floor-- and a spirit departed from it and a real curse was lifted.
Important update - info we left out: We learned later that repenting from what led to the curse is significant in breaking a curse. Emily did repent from having the idol the same day she broke it! The burden to repent came over her and she followed through with it - success! :D She asked for forgiveness with a firm resolve that she would not do this again...and she also repented from the bitter thoughts and words she had about her difficult roommate.
