The High Seas Treaty (BBNJ Agreement) enters into force on 17 January 2026, marking the first time the global community has a legally binding framework to conserve and sustainably use marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, nearly half the planet.
To help unpack what this milestone means, this media briefing covered what entry into force looks like in practice and the roadmap from the BBNJ Preparatory Commission (PrepCom) meeting that is discussing the set up of the Treaty to the first Conference of Parties (CoP1). It also outlined early steps in implementation, biodiversity hotspots and candidate first-generation High Seas MPA sites.
