The standout track Prophets Never Sleep became an underground anthem across sound systems in Trenchtown, Brixton, and Johannesburg, carrying a message of defiance, healing, and black consciousness.

Born Lemuel "Shepherd" Asare in 1951 on the outskirts of Montego Bay, Jamaica, The Herb Shepherd emerged from the heart of the roots movement like a prophet in patched denim and a lion's crown of dreadlocks. Raised by a Rastafarian elder and a herbalist mother, he was immersed in natural living, mysticism, and rebel philosophy from birth.

In the late ‘70s, he traveled across the Caribbean and Africa with only a guitar and a journal, absorbing indigenous sounds, stories, and spiritual truths. Returning to Jamaica in 1981, he entered the studio with the underground collective Nyabinghi Soundworks, channeling all his experience into what would become his legendary debut: Zion Rebel.

Never one to chase fame or radio play, The Herb Shepherd became a cult icon for those seeking substance over style. His live shows were half concert, half ceremony—filled with smoke, psalms, and sermon-like energy that left crowds both uplifted and in awe.

Though he disappeared from the public eye in the mid-90s, whispers of his teachings, lost tapes, and hillside retreats continue to fuel the myth. To his followers, he’s not just an artist—he’s a shepherd of truth.
