Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) was an Argentine tango composer, bandoneon player, and arranger. He was born in Mar del Plata, Argentina to Italian immigrant parents. His exposure to music began when his family moved to New York, which is also, where he learnt to play the bandoneon. Through his musical career, Piazzolla revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music.
One of the composer’s most popular tangos, Oblivion, became widely known through the soundtrack of Mario Bellocchio’s film Enricho IV. Oblivion has been recorded in many versions including for clarinet, oboe, and orchestra. This arrangement is for a small ensemble: flute, alto flute and guitar. The piece has a haunting air about it, beginning with subtle, long notes in the melody with periodic shifts to quicker passages. The ‘B’ section offers a slight contrast to the somber piece yet still highlights the darkness that hovers over the music, before a return to the ‘A’ section concludes the piece.
