🌙 What happens at PalaGali during Muharram?

Emotional processions (Juloos): Every day of Muharram, especially up to Ashura, the PalaGali street is transformed. It's adorned with black flags and banners, and replicas of shrines known as alam and taziya are carried through the narrow lanes .

Majlis & Noha Khwani: The community gathers for mournful recitals (noha) and majlis sessions, often daily during the first ten days .

Matam : The men in the procession rhythmically beat their chests or use zanjeer (chains) to express grief—an intense display of devotion and solidarity with Imam Hussain’s sacrifice .

Shabil (Sabeel): Charitable distribution of water or sherbet to mourners and passersby is common—a reflection of the values of compassion and sharing .

From 1 Muharram, the atmosphere is solemn and growing in intensity.

Tasu'a (9 Muharram) and Ashura (10 Muharram) see the most significant gatherings, with intense matam and massive crowd presence in the lane and surrounding areas .

The processions are primarily organized by local Shia communities in Dongri, but attract people of various backgrounds.

Many participate in matam, noha-khwani, and may donate or serve water at the Shabil stands .
