Vale de Talha Scandal
José Amarelinho, the former mayor of Aljezur, was convicted in 2012 for licensing irregularities related to the Vale da Telha housing development. He received a suspended prison sentence of three years and two months, contingent upon the payment of €5,000 to the League for the Protection of Nature. This means he did not serve actual jail time. Additionally, the court ordered his removal from office, a decision upheld after multiple appeals. In 2018, Amarelinho suspended his mandate as mayor following the exhaustion of his legal appeals. ​
