Decision Making | Animation Video

'Decision Making'’ is the opening track of 'The Housewarming LP': a chronological album about a housewarming party gone wrong. The song starts off the party with an appetizer of small-talk and awkward conversations to get you in the mood.

LYRICS AND COMPOSITION
The lyrics paint the picture of the opening stages of the evening while the music keeps on looping between two chords. The slow tempo (80 bpm) reflects the drowsy, somewhat boring atmosphere.

In the bridge, the chords suddenly change from D# major to D# minor. The bass guitar and drums recognise this shift and explode with a bang of emotion. The song intensifies and evolves into a melancholic outro as the vocals realize that it might not have been such a great idea to come to this party.

'Decision Making' was the first song I specifically wrote for this project. To me, it captures the essence of the album unlike any other song. Lyrically and musically, it's the calm before the storm, the slow realisation of past mistakes: You should have stayed at home.

CREDITS
A big thank you to Xavier De Clercq for suggesting an A/B structure for this track. The original demo was much more sausage-like, lacking dynamics and contrast between the different musical sections. Xavi suggested to strip the first part from all its unnecessarily fancy clothes, which gave room for a nice, energetic explosion in the bridge.

During the recording sessions, I invited Siebe Puynen (Sonders), Jan Joos and Christoph Goossens (Mister Moon) and asked them to pretend to be priests. They obliged and made some nice guttural growls.

Finally, I would also like to thank Anly Lippens (Safran) for her impeccable vocal contributions to the chorus and bridge. She also provided conceptual support throughout the making of the music video and came up with some great ideas.
