British Railways No.D7585 (25235) Some History :-
Type 2 Class 25 BoBo locomotive, British Railways No.D7585 (25235) was the second main line diesel loco purchased by the SRPS. It was withdrawn in March 1985 and was dumped in Bescot Yard, until put up for sale in April 1990. The loco was in very poor condition following 5 years of open storage, but the only major missing item was the turbocharger, along with numerous smaller items. As these were all readily available from MC Metals, and it was the only unsold Type 2 remaining with dual brakes and a steam heating boiler, a successful bid was made.25235 presented much more of a challenge than 27005 had, and was tackled with great enthusiasm. Work proceeded very quickly, and the power unit was removed for overhaul. Within 12 months, the engine and generator were reconditioned and refitted, a new steel sub-floor was fitted to No.1 cab, all the missing components were fitted to the electrical system, and all the missing valves and pipework were made up and fitted to the air system.
After a quick coat of BR Blue paint, the loco operated at the September 1991 Diesel weekend. However, a great deal of work was still required, and over the following 2 years 25235 was completely rewired, No.2 cab was removed to repair corrosion in the frame and a new steel sub-floor was also fitted at that end. Large amounts of platework were renewed and both cabs were fully fitted out internally, including new wooden floor panels. The loco was then repainted inside and out and went into regular use in 1994. The steam heat boiler was replaced with a spare after the original was found to be unrepairable. This has seen some testing, but will require the water and fuel pump to be overhauled and a replacement fuel injector nozzle found before final setting up and insurance. The boiler water tank will also require major repair to eradicate the many leaks.25235 made its first trip away from Bo'ness in July 2000 when it took part in the East Lancashire Railway Diesel Week.
After a trip to Polmadie Open Day in September 2000, its next outing was to the Keighley and Worth Valley Diesel Weekend in August 2001, where it achieved cult superhero status, due to the excellent thrash output. The locomotive has recently had a main generator overhaul. It is intended to undertake some major overhaul work on this loco which will involve removal of the bogies to allow the traction motors to go, together with the spare motor, for servicing and baking to restore the correct insulation values. During this time the body work corrosion will be repaired and the loco repainted before returning to service. Wear on one wheelset has resulted in 25 235 being confined to 'yard' duties.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could support all of our wonderful Railway Preservation Society organizations worldwide.
