Inside, the air smelled of pine and old wool. Emma dropped her bag, pulling off her gloves. “It’s… peaceful.”
“Enjoy it while it lasts.”
Natalie checked her phone — no signal. That was good. Disconnection was safety. Still, something in her chest refused to rest.
As night fell, they built a small fire. Emma curled on the couch with a blanket. Natalie sat nearby, cleaning her sidearm out of habit more than need.
“You always clean that thing like it’s a prayer,” Emma said softly.
Natalie smiled without looking up. “Maybe it is.”
“Do you ever think about what happens when you’re done? When there’s no one left to fight?”
Natalie paused, hand stilling on the metal. “I think… that’s when I’ll have to learn how to live.”
“And if that day never comes?”
“Then I’ll keep trying anyway.”
The flames flickered, painting their faces gold. Outside, wind scraped against the cabin walls like the whisper of old ghosts.
Near midnight, the fire burned low. Emma had drifted to sleep on the couch, her breathing steady now, untroubled. Natalie stood by the window again, watching snow fall in slow spirals.
She almost missed the sound. A single crunch of snow outside — faint, deliberate. Then another.
Her pulse slowed, mind sharpening. She moved silently to the door, peered through the crack. Nothing. Only trees, heavy with snow.
Then — the faint blink of a red light in the distance. Too steady to be reflection. A lens.
She stepped back, whispering to herself, “They found us.”
From the couch, Emma stirred. “What is it?”
Natalie’s voice was calm, controlled — the voice of someone who’d lived too long with danger. “Stay low. Don’t move until I say.”
She killed the lantern, plunging the room into shadow. Only the ember-glow of the dying fire remained.
Outside, the wind carried the low hum of an approaching engine.
Natalie reached for her weapon, chambered a round softly. “So much for quiet,” she murmured.
Emma’s whisper trembled through the dark. “Is it them?”
Natalie’s eyes stayed fixed on the window. “If it isn’t,” she said, “it’s someone who wishes they were.”
A single headlight appeared through the trees, cutting a pale beam across the snow.
Then — silence.
No doors opening. No voices. Just the ticking of the cooling engine, the kind of silence that came right before something broke.
Natalie exhaled slowly, every nerve in her body tuned to the waiting.
In that moment, she thought of all the things she’d fought for — orders, justice, truth — and realized what really mattered wasn’t survival. It was the promise she’d made to a frightened waitress two years ago:
You’re safe now.
She tightened her grip on the weapon, gaze unflinching.
Not this time. Not again.
Outside, the headlight flickered once — then went dark.
And in the sudden, complete silence, Natalie whispered the words that had carried her through every war she’d ever fought:
“Protect what’s fragile. Even if no one’s watching.”
Then she moved.
