Quantum physics unquestionably underpins the function and properties of atoms and molecules; whether this scales up and applies to macromolecules and beyond is hotly debated. Unravelling this could lead to further fundamental insights into the inner machinations of biology.
The “Thinking Beyond” webinar series features renowned physicists Paul Davies, Sara Walker and Maulik Parikh from the Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science at Arizona State University and addresses big questions/topics in science. This month, Louie Slocombe will present the topic and will be joined by Maulik Parikh.
Louie Slocombe is a theoretical chemist/biophysicist exploring how quantum effects, like proton tunnelling and coherence, may influence biological processes. He is Research Laboratory Manager at Arizona State University’s Beyond Center and has previously been a Research Fellow in Theoretical Quantum Biology at the University of Surrey. His publications include work on open-quantum-systems models of proton transfer in DNA and quantum/classical contributions to ion selectivity in ion channels.
