Maceo Parker (born February 14, 1943 in Kinston, North Carolina) is an American funk, soul and jazz saxophonist. He is best known for his collaboration with James Brown. Parker comes from a musical family. His father sang in church and his two brothers also became musicians (drums and trombone). Together with his brother Melvin, he joined James Brown's band in 1964. About this, Brown writes in his autobiography that he originally only wanted Melvin as his drummer, but as part of the agreement he agreed to include Maceo in his band as well. Parker has had an important influence on the sound of Brown's music, and connoisseurs consider Parker to be the best saxophone player James Brown ever had. The Parker brothers and some other band members of James Brown left the band to form a new band called Maceo & All the Kings Men. This band toured for two years before Maceo Parker returned to Brown's band in 1973. In 1975, Maceo and several band members, including Fred Wesley, left the band for the second time to join George Clinton's p-funk collective called Parliament. After playing with Brown again between 1984 and 1988, Parker went on a solo tour and released many solo albums (see discography). He also played live about 250 times a year. Since 1999 he has played on several Prince albums. Between 2001 and 2005 he was a member of Prince's band, the New Power Generation, with which he completed several tours. Parker also played with Prince at the 2011 North Sea Jazz Festival. In 2018 and 2019 he gave several concerts in the Netherlands and Germany, in 2020 in Belgium.
