The Brown Scapular is a sacramental worn by Catholics as a sign of devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It's a small piece of brown wool cloth (usually two rectangles) connected by strings and worn over the scapula (Latin for shoulder blade).

Where did the Scapular come from? - The Brown Scapular devotion began in 1251, when Our Lady appeared to a Carmelite friar, St. Simon Stock. She gave him the scapular and said, "Whoever dies wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire."
This event famously became the foundation of the Scapular Promise.

According to tradition, if we wear the Brown Scapular faithfully, Our Lady promises us
Her protection in life and death
and - final persercance
It is a great honor to strive for a life of holiness, like Our Lady
