How do MPNs change from one MPN to another?

Myeloproliferative neoplasms are chronic disorders causing excess production of blood cells. These disorders have the ability to transform from one type to another due to mutations found in MPN cells. Currently there is no standard way to determine if an MPN will change into another down the line, but it is an area of research physicians at the Weill Cornell Medicine Richard T. Silver Myeloproliferative Neoplasms Center are working on in an effort to identify approaches that can change the risk of transformation. Not all MPNs will change to another, but polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia most commonly have the ability to transform into myelofibrosis and myelofibrosis in turn can transform into acute leukemia. The pace and chance of transformation varies from patient to patient and depends on the cell characteristics.
