A Serious Review of Metal Gear Survive in 2024...

After the release of Metal Gear Solid V, the future of the franchise would be pretty uncertain. Shortly after the game’s release, Hideo Kojima along with the rest of the Kojima Productions team would part ways with Konami for reasons that we still don’t know with 100% certainty to this day, as neither party involved has spoken on the matter publicly. This was a big deal, as despite the fact that Kojima had been involved with every single Metal Gear game up to this point outside of Snake’s Revenge, Konami still held the legal rights to the IP. This meant that if they wanted to make more Metal Gear games, they would have to do so without Kojima for the first time in over 25 years. So when they sat down to decide what to do with the franchise next, someone in the room pitched an interesting idea. Hideo Kojima had been talking about wanting to make a zombie game for a while before his departure, and had even spoken to some of the designers at PlatinumGames about making a sequel to Metal Gear Rising that would see Cyborg Ninja Gray Fox fighting against nano machine-powered zombies. So someone at Konami brought up the idea of making a zombie game within the Metal Gear universe, and that idea quickly turned into a brand new title for the franchise that would come to be known as Metal Gear Survive. But as I’m sure most of you already know, Metal Gear fans were not happy with this idea. As soon as the game was announced, fans were angry that Konami would get rid of Kojima and his team and then so quickly turn his beloved franchise into a generic zombie game. Reactions would become even worse as fans found out that the game would heavily revolve around co-op multiplayer, recycle a ton of assets from Metal Gear Solid V, have microtransactions, and even require a constant internet connection to even play the game. The game would eventually be released in February of 2018, and would see some of the lowest sales in the franchise’s history, getting even less total sales than the NES port of the original Metal Gear back in the 80’s. So all that begs the question, does Metal Gear Survive really deserve to have such a terrible reputation and be completely written off by the fandom? Well, let’s talk about it.

Metal Gear Survive is a 2018 survival game developed by Konami Digital Entertainment and published by Konami. The game was released for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in February 2018. It is the first Metal Gear game to be developed following the series' creator Hideo Kojima's departure from Konami in late 2015, and the first since 1990's Snake's Revenge to be made without Kojima's input. Survive takes place between the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and follows the Captain, an MSF soldier who enters a parallel dimension and establishes a local command center to unravel the mysteries of a strange virus that turns people into zombie-like creatures.
