This Sonata is one of the most beautiful written for the clarinet, and here we have just the 2nd movement. It was written for Richard Mühlfeld and given its first public performance in Vienna in January 1895. Brahms was a phenomenal pianist, and this sonata is a real challenge for any pianist. It is beautifully written for the clarinet (and piano), and shows that Brahms had acquired a great understanding of the qualities of the instrument, no doubt enhanced by hearing Richard play privately to him. Although I intend to upload a real performance of this work (together with Sonata No 2) with me playing the clarinet, this performance was created using a keyboard and Vienna Symphonic Library's Synchron Solo Clarinet and Bösendorfer Imperial Grand piano sample sets.
