With a warm Spring day giving us the perfect opportunity, we're delving into the first inspection of an overwintered nucleus colony (nuc). Join Alun as he assesses how these small but important hives fared through the Winter months.
He'll be looking at:-
Queen Status: Is she present and laying? We'll look for signs of eggs and healthy brood and a consistent laying pattern.
Brood Health: We'll check for any disease or abnormalities in the developing brood.
Food Stores: How much honey did they consume over Winter? Do they still have enough reserves for the Spring buildup?
Hive Strength: We'll determine if the nuc is expanding as expected and look if the bees are storing pollen?
Overall Hive Health: Are there any signs of pests, diseases, or other issues that need may addressing?
This first inspection is crucial for understanding the health and potential of our overwintered nucs. Soon they’ll be moved on into full-sized hives in their new permanent locations. Whether you're a seasoned beekeeper or just starting out, we hope this video will provide valuable insights into nucleus colony inspection and spring hive management .
