El acorde "inimaginable", por Arnold Schoenberg. Noche transfigurada, Op. 4 (Verklärte Nacht).

Escribió Schoenberg en su tratado de armonía el respecto:

En mi Sexteto "Noche Transfigurada", sin considerar la teoría musical, guiado solo por mi oído, utilicé una inversión de un acorde de novena. Esta inversión, conocida como la más inimaginable por los teóricos, provocó disgusto al descubrir que podría llevar a una resolución no convencional, la llamada "séptima defectuosa". Sin embargo, la controversia resultó en un rechazo inicial del sexteto por parte de ciertos críticos, quienes argumentaron que la inversión del acorde de novena era inexistente y, por lo tanto, no podía ser estrenada. Años después, el sexteto se estrenó sin que nadie notara la presencia del acorde de novena en cuarta inversión. Actualmente, tales detalles no afectan la percepción de quienes toman en serio la música.

In my Sextet "Transfigured Night", without considering music theory, guided solely by my ear, I used an inversion of a ninth chord. This inversion, known as the most unimaginable by theorists, caused dismay upon discovering that it could lead to an unconventional resolution, the so-called "defective seventh". However, the controversy resulted in an initial rejection of the sextet by certain critics, who argued that the inversion of the ninth chord was nonexistent and therefore could not be premiered. Years later, the sextet premiered without anyone noticing the presence of the ninth chord in fourth inversion. Currently, such details do not affect the perception of those who take music seriously
