We drove two hours to the Rock River Dam in Illinois with one goal: catch a monster catfish. Armed with nightcrawlers and a cast net, we managed to pull in fresh shad for bait—but the bite was slow and the current was strong. Just when we thought the trip might be a bust, my cousin Scott hooked into something big. What followed was an intense fight in the spillway current, that turned out to be a personal best and a new species for him.
