🚄 The Channel Tunnel: An Engineering Marvel Beneath the Sea 🌊
Connecting France and the United Kingdom, the Channel Tunnel (Chunnel) is one of the greatest civil engineering achievements of the 20th century.
🛠️ Key Facts:
🔹 Length: 50.5 km (31 miles)
🔹 Underwater section: 37.9 km — the longest underwater tunnel in the world 🌍
🔹 Depth: Up to 75 meters below the seabed
🔹 Construction period: 1988 – 1994
🔹 Workers involved: Over 13,000 engineers and workers from both sides
The tunnel consists of three parallel tubes — two for trains and one service tunnel — bored through chalk marl using massive tunnel boring machines (TBMs).
It allows high-speed trains, freight, and vehicles to travel between Calais (France) and Folkestone (UK) in just 35 minutes — a symbol of connection, innovation, and European engineering excellence.
