We took our ski adventures to the next level with cabin to cabin (hytte til hytte) back country skiing in the Jotunheimen mountain region of Norway.
Back country skiing, or ski touring, is similar to cross country skiing, but the main difference being the absence of groomed / prepared tracks.
Our main sponsor for this episode, DNT (Norwegian Trekking Association) maintains approx 550 cabins all across Norway, and we had the pleasure of staying in 2 of these cabins (huts) during our ski trip.
In the Langsua area of Jotunheimen, we started the trip skiing from Finnbøle, then onto the first cabin at Storhøliseter, before skiing onwards to Oskampen, and then finally skiing back to the starting point on day three. You can find more detail on the exact route here:
We are also extremely thankful to Rottefella for providing us with the back country skis (and skins, boots and poles!) for the trip. The back country skis, which are lighter than regular alpine skis but slightly wider and more sturdy than cross country skis, are a hybrid ski to allow for the mix of walking, skiing uphill, and also downhill.
The DNT cabin concept, which allows guests to stay in cosy and well maintained cabins, often in very remote areas, is hugely popular and it’s easy to see why. Accessible all year round, cabin to cabin trips are as popular with summer hikers as they are winter skiers.
Note that ski touring does come with an additional level of risk vs skiing in a resort, and it is essential to be prepared and take the necessary precautions.
