The third part of my trip to the Victorian High Country in November 2024 in my 2012 Land Rover Discovery 4.
This episode covers Day 4 and 5 of our trip covering the 369km from Dargo to Tom Groggin
My trip was a tag along with Adam of Tracks 4x4 Tagalong with whom I have done a number of trips including a number of Simpson Desert crossings a couple of Hay River Trips, Googs and SA and also the Canning Stock Route.
There were eleven vehicles in our group in total, so a big group.
Day 4 of our Victorian High Country trip covered 214km from Dargo to Bently Plain.
The day started off with fast run on the Dargo High Plains Road. We then tacked the exhilarating Blue Rag Range Track to the trig beacon and back. We had to drop off the trailers again. What a track - loved it.
Then it was a short run on the rest of the Dargo High Pains Road onto the bitumen of the very scenic, Great Alpine Road, which led us through Mount Hotham, Omeo for a pie, Swifts Creek and then back on the the gravel on the Jacobs Meadow and Spring Gully Roads which lead us through some cow paddocks.
Then a bit more bitumen on the Little River road, but again very pretty. The gravel of the Bentley Plain Road led us to the Bentley Plain Camp Ground for the night.
Day 5, the final day started with a visit to the Moscow Villa Hut and then s beautiful run through the forrest on the Bentley Plain and Nunniong Roads.
The Mount Misery Road led us onto the less well travelled Macs Creek Road with a lot of fallen timber on the track. Then it was on to the McCarthys Track which proved a challenge for Shane & Lee (who where towing a trailer) who had to be winched up a particularly difficult section which caught out a number of the crew.
Then a bit of mud on the flat of the Buckwong Track which eventually resulted in the demise of Brain & Chris' problem CV on their Prado (they still managed to complete the trip with a bit of help from Adam).
The final afternoon of the trip was spent on the Mount Hope Road and Tom Groggin Track with final river crossing of the mighty Murray River.
My thanks to all for their company - I had a great time (as always), and look forward to meeting again on the tracks somewhere in Australia.
Finally is was back to Canberra to pickup Mum and the 2,3987km back to Mackay, which included stops at Armatree Hotel, Glen Garry Hilton and Hebel Hotel, among others.
