Sunrise on the Reaping: When Format is the Function

Sunrise on the Reaping feels less like a prequel than a do-over when presenting the Hunger Games games.

I like it. I have some grievances, but the good outweighs the bad. There's obviously the convenience that Haymitch has a relationship with mainly series-relevant characters, but you gotta go along with the vibe check with these things. Some do feel like it contributes to this sense of many efforts over many years leading to a final snap, but some make it feel like this small pocket of people is all that ever mattered. Overall, when I think about the elements that make this series, I feel like this was Collins presenting her ideas with the sharpest point and with the richest amount of incorporation.

When you have a book that is literally about how pointless gestures of resistance can feel...we're going down a meta rabbit hole that will either be pretty cool or infuriating.

Should you buy it? IDK, I got my copy from the library. Everything's worth it when it's free. Libby's a great app.

If you like Sunrise, Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah might be a good chaser.
