As many foreigners and People of Lao origin living abroad have expressed an interest in living in Laos permanently, the Lao Government is to introduce in the very near future a new decree outlining permanent residency requirements for foreigners.
People of Lao origin living abroad, as well as foreign nationals, can apply for permanent residency in Laos once the new decree is approved by the government.
The new draft decree will cover two groups of people – people of Lao origin living abroad and foreign nationals, including stateless people. The aim of the decree is to encourage people of Lao origin living abroad to return to their homeland and contribute to national development in their birthplace. The new decree also aims to respond to the requests of people of Lao origin living abroad who want to return home and spend the rest of their lives in Laos. The draft decree also stipulates seven conditions for foreign nationals or stateless people seeking permanent residency in Laos.

The Lao PDR offers many types of visas for a wide range of travel purposes. When traveling to Laos, applicants will choose between the
following visa types depending on their unique situation:

1/. Diplomatic visa (D-A1)
2/. Official visa (S-A2)
3/.Spouse visa(SP-B3)
+This is a visa reserved for the legally registered spouses of Lao citizens.
4/. Courtesy visa (C-B1)
5/. Tourist visa (T-B3)
+This visa is issued to visitors traveling to Laos for the purpose of tourism and leisure.
6/. Short-term visa (NI-B3)
This is visa is issued to either foreign technical officers coming to Laos for training, events, or meetings OR foreign stateless people who are visiting family, or engaging in other short-term appointments.
7/. Long -term visa (I-B3)
+Foreign and stateless individuals, and their dependents, can come to Laos on this visa as long-term laborers or residents, provided they meet the minimum financial requirements.
8/. Permanent visa (P-B3)
+This is a residence permit for foreign nationals and stateless individuals, and their dependents, who plan to live in the Lao PDR long-term.
9/. Expert visa(E-B2)
10/. Transit visa (TR-B3)
11/. Business visa (NI-B2 or I-B1)
12/. Student visa (ST-B2)
13/. Media visa(M-B2)
14/. Labor visa (LA-B2)
