The morning sun cast long shadows across the Miami cruise terminal as I stood with my parents and siblings, watching the massive Ocean Princess gleam white against the turquoise waters of Biscayne Bay. At over 1,000 feet long and carrying 4,200 passengers, she was one of the newest and most luxurious ships in the world - though my family had no idea just how personally connected I was to this particular vessel.
"I still can't believe we're actually doing this," Mom said, clutching Dad's arm as she stared up at the ship's towering decks. Patricia Hawkins had been dreaming of a luxury cruise for their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary for months, and Dad had finally surprised her with this week-long Caribbean voyage.
"Twenty-five years deserves something special," Dad replied, kissing her temple. Robert Hawkins owned a small accounting firm in suburban Cleveland, and while they were comfortable, a luxury cruise was definitely a splurge for their family.
