Welcome to an overview of the Gothic style centered around this fairly rare example of the prime gothic piece - some of which is seemingly from the original period, circa 1500. Regardless of the technically unknown authenticity of the front panel, this gothic chest is a good anchor for the broader discussion of 15th century furniture.
The unique and sophisticated gothic style begins in France and unfolds from the 12th to the 16th centuries. The "Gothic" is now mainly associated with the church and sometimes institutions/universities. Originally, it was also very much a domestic style for albeit very special interiors, almost none of which survive today outside of paintings. One does see gothic interiors still, as the pointed style was revived in various special homes throughout the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.
As usual, this video seeks to help demystify the often misunderstood subject of "antiques" or furniture from the past by making disjunctive and elusive information succinctly available. My commentary will be incomplete and not without error, as my real work is to find things of beauty and offer them for sale - These videos share what I learn along the way as seriously as possible, but without claiming to be at a curator's academic level of understanding. Hopefully the hands on experience of a dealer will make up for certain lapses in precision or depth.
