The River Won’t Give Up Its Secrets Easily

Magnet fishing at the Dan McCarthy Boat Launch in Barnstable, Massachusetts turned out to be one of my most surprising days yet. I first came to this spot in the winter and was blown away by the beauty of it — calm water, crisp Cape Cod air, and a place that just makes you want to drop a magnet in and see what’s hiding below. Coming back this time, I knew it would be good, but I didn’t expect what we pulled up.

We started with the usual finds; fishing hooks, bottle caps, and even what looks like an old broken window weight. Not the prettiest treasures, but every piece pulled up is one less bit of junk sitting in the water. Then came the big surprise. The last time I was here, I heard rumors that kids used to ride their bikes right off the docks into the water. I laughed it off, figured it was just a local tall tale. But this time, my magnet latched onto something big and heavy and sure enough, it was an entire mountain bike.

So the rumor was true after all. The Dan McCarthy Boat Launch had its secrets, and we brought at least one of them back to the surface. Between the cleanup, the random finds, and the shock of pulling up a bike, this spot definitely earned a spot on my Cape Cod magnet fishing list.
