Legend Bey is one of the most extraordinary running quarterbacks the Dallas area has seen in a long time, but Waxahachie wasn’t going to let the Ohio State pledge be the difference maker Friday night.

Not only did Waxahachie’s vaunted defense stifle the North Forney four-star recruit, but Bey was upstaged by a senior defensive back with no college offers and a sophomore running back who is just starting to emerge as a star.

Taylen Strange ran for a season-high 204 yards and Hector Calderon III made one huge play after another on defense and special teams as Waxahachie beat North Forney 37-20 in a Class 6A Division I area-round playoff game at Choctaw Stadium.
Strange, who has offers from SMU, UNLV and Lamar, ran for 132 yards in the second half and had his fifth game with more than 100 yards as Waxahachie advanced to play Cypress Ranch in the regional semifinals.
Bey came into the game leading Dallas-area 6A players with 29 rushing touchdowns, and his 1,624 rushing yards were third most in the area. Rated the ninth-best athlete in the nation in the Class of 2026, Bey had 12 touchdown runs of 27 yards or longer before Friday, including seven of more than 50 yards, and all three of his 200-yard rushing games had been in the last five games.

North Forney entered Friday leading area 6A teams in total offense (532 yards per game) and rushing offense (384.9 yards per game) while ranking second in scoring offense (52.6 points per game). The team has three 1,000-yard rushers, with Asuquo and fellow running back Cordai Woodard joining Bey, but North Forney managed just 180 yards on 37 running plays.

That shouldn’t have been a surprise, as Waxahachie’s defense had been one of the best in Dallas-Fort Worth against the run, allowing 111.5 yards per game before Friday. In a 28-27 win over three-time state champion Duncanville, Waxahachie allowed just 17 yards on 25 attempts.
Waxahachie led by six at halftime after holding Bey and Asuquo to a combined 109 yards on 23 carries. Bey did break free for a 27-yard touchdown run, but the only other North Forney run longer than 11 yards in the first half was when he ran for a 39-yard scramble.
Bey averaged just 14 pass attempts and 129 passing yards per game before Friday but had completions of 43 and 27 yards to Briceson Thrower that set up Asuquo’s first 4-yard touchdown run, cutting Waxahachie’s lead to 17-14 with 7:09 left in the second quarter. Ethan Guillen kicked a 32-yard field goal for Waxahachie on the ensuing drive, one of his three field goals in the game.
