Vauxhall Vivaro Repair: Solving Check Injection Faults and DPF Issues

Ever had that sinking feeling when your Vauxhall Vivaro's dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree? Check injection fault, spanner light, engine management light. And what if you've already taken it to the mechanic, only for the problems to return within a couple of miles? That's exactly the situation we're tackling today. Let's dive into how to diagnose and fix these common Vivaro issues, focusing on a real-world case study.


Understanding the Initial Problem

Okay, so what were the initial symptoms? The van came in with those warning lights blazing. It's not just annoying; it's a sign something's seriously wrong. The owner had been experiencing recurring issues, with the faults stubbornly reappearing soon after each repair attempt.

The initial scan revealed a few key diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs):

P2002-92: Particle filter low efficiency
P2263-22: Turbocharger boost performance
Engine oil life exceeded
P253F-29: Particle filter (again!)

Now, you might think, "Oh, it's the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) again." But hold on. Focusing solely on the DPF can be misleading. That turbocharger boost performance code is a major clue. Often, DPF issues are a symptom of a larger problem, not the root cause.


Investigating the Turbocharger Boost Performance

To get to the bottom of this, we need to dig deeper. That means looking at live data. Using a Launch X431 Euro scan tool, we can monitor what's happening in real-time.

What parameters are we looking at?

Boost pressure
Manifold pressure
Differential pressure sensor voltage
Soot accumulation

The interesting thing was those negative readings on the sensor. That's not right and points to a potential issue with the turbocharger system.

Next up, a good old-fashioned visual inspection. Popping the bonnet, a quick look around revealed some wetness near the power steering pump and boost hoses. Is it a boost leak? Or just something spilled? Time to investigate further.


Smoke Testing for Leaks

How do we find a boost leak? With a smoke tester! In this case, we used a Launch Smoke One. It's a handy tool for pumping smoke into the intake system, making any leaks obvious.

It turned out the clamp was loose. Sometimes, it's the simple things that cause the biggest headaches.

Tightening the clamp sorted the problem. Even under the low pressure of the smoke tester, the leak was significant. Imagine how much pressure would be escaping when the turbo is actually running!


Examining the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)

Time to check the DPF itself. We raised the vehicle to inspect the tailpipe. The good news? It was clean, with no excessive soot buildup. That rules out a cracked DPF as the primary issue.

Next, we located the DPF pressure sensor. These sensors can be problematic on Vauxhall/Renault systems. We disconnected the hose for testing. Interestingly, these systems often cut off the DPF pressure sensor if a fault code is logged.

We cleared the fault codes and rechecked the data. But even with a new sensor, we were still getting unusual readings. What's going on?


The Renault System Revelation

This is where things get interesting. Here's a crucial tip: don't always rely on the Vauxhall/Opel diagnostic system for these vans. Instead, switch to the Renault system (specifically, Renault Traffic II). The Opel system can be unreliable on these vehicles.

Why? Because under the skin, Vauxhall Vivaros are often rebadged Renault Traffic vans.

Switching to the Renault system gave us access to accurate data.

Now we could see the following parameters and their readings:

Differential pressure: 57 mibars
Soot: 72 grams
Manifold pressure: 1,05
Boost pressure

We also noticed changes in pressure readings when the engine was revved. Finally, we were getting somewhere.


Addressing the Oil Dilution Fault and DPF Regeneration

Next up was addressing the oil dilution fault. We tried a pedal reset procedure. Why? Because the DPF regeneration process won't work until this fault is cleared.

Remember, using the Renault system is vital for accurate diagnostics and proper2 function of the DPF system.


DPF Cleaning and Final Steps

With the diagnostics sorted, we injected DPF cleaning fluid into the DPF. How? Through the pressure sensor hose.

Then, we revved the engine to 3,000 RPM to burn off the soot. It worked! Soot levels dropped from 80 grams to 20 grams. Even with 170,000 miles on the clock, the cleaning was effective.

Finally, a test drive to ensure everything was running smoothly. The results? 5 grams of soot and 5 mibars of pressure. Perfect. All fault codes cleared.

So, what did we learn?

The loose boost hose was the primary culprit. This caused a chain reaction, leading to DPF blockage and other related faults.

The van is now running smoothly.
