In October 1813, the thunder of war shook the fields around Leipzig. After his disastrous retreat from Russia, Napoleon faced the united might of Europe — Russians, Prussians, Austrians, and Swedes — gathered under one banner to end his empire once and for all.
Over four relentless days, the world’s greatest commander fought the largest battle of his career. The marshes of Saxony turned into a graveyard of empires: cavalry charges crashed through smoke, cities burned, and the river Elster swallowed the rearguard as the bridge exploded beneath them. Marshal Poniatowski drowned just hours after being made a marshal, and with him sank the last glory of the Grande Armée.
The Battle of Leipzig, remembered as the Battle of Nations, marked the beginning of the end for Napoleon. His empire east of the Rhine collapsed, his allies deserted, and Europe stood at the threshold of a new age.
