How to Choose the BEST Roller Skate Wheels!
This video is a bit longer because I'm getting back into the swing and flow of filming and speaking to the camera without yapping too much. When I was just starting out skating years ago, roller skate wheels were such a mystery to me because when I started to look up different wheels there was a never-ending supply of all sorts of wheels with different numbers and letters and colors and shapes to them. It took some trial and error through experience to finally understand better what makes a wheel unique and how each specific wheel affects the skater and skate style.

What's durometer?
So first off: durometer is a fancy word for how hard or soft your wheel is. You’ll usually see a number with an “A” after it, like 78A or 101A.
The higher the number → the harder the wheel.
The lower the number → the softer the wheel.
• 78A to 85A = soft wheels
Great for outdoor skating. They absorb shock, grip rough ground, and give you that smooth-glide feeling on pavement.
• 88A to 95A = medium-hard
A lil more slide, still grippy. Good all-around choice for dance or rhythm skating, especially on slick indoor floors.
• 98A to 101A = hard wheels
These are slick, fast, and slidey. Great for jams, shuffle, spins — but not ideal if you’re outside or still getting your footing.
Now for wheel size, which affects how fast and agile you feel.
• Smaller wheels (like 57mm–59mm) = quicker moves, faster acceleration, and lower to the ground.
Perfect for jam skating, rhythm, or dance styles where you wanna spin and groove.
• Bigger wheels (62mm–65mm and up) = more speed, better for cruising or outdoor skating.
They roll over cracks and rocks easier but take more effort to stop or change direction.
So what skate wheel is best for YOUUUU?!
Here’s a quick guide based on your style:
• Outdoor cruising?
→ Soft wheels (78A–85A), bigger size. Your knees will thank you.
• Indoor dance/skating rinks?
→ Medium-hard (88A–95A), smaller size for those juicy spins and toe transitions.
• Jam or shuffle skating?
→ Harder wheels (95A–101A), small and slick for smooth slidey moves.
• Park skating?
→ Honestly, depends on the surface. Most park skaters like medium-durometer (around 95A) and a size that lets them land jumps but still cruise smooth.
So again, it’s not about buying the “best” wheels — it’s about finding the right ones for you.
Also, don’t be afraid to experiment, maybe borrowing wheels from a friend rather than buying a bunch at once because I know skate gear is not cheap! Speaking of, here are some links to a few skate wheels that worked great for me during certain seasons of my skate life:
