In this video, we build an 80-litre blackwater biotope aquarium inspired by the Amazon River, designed specifically as a naturalistic habitat for small South American species. Using a variety of carefully selected woods: mopani, beech, and driftwood. We create a complex, root-like structure that mimics the submerged tree systems commonly found along Amazonian riverbanks. To complete the authentic look and function, we add hundreds of leaves, including oak and jackfruit, which gradually release tannins into the water. These tannins not only give the tank its distinctive tea-coloured appearance but also help create a soft, acidic environment that many Amazonian species thrive in.
For livestock, we introduce a peaceful community of ember tetras and cardinal tetras, whose vibrant colours contrast beautifully against the dark, tannin-stained waters. To add variety and functionality, we also include a group of orange sakura shrimp, which help clean up detritus while bringing a splash of colour to the forest floor. This setup not only looks stunning but also promotes natural behaviours in the fish, closely replicating the wild environments they originate from.
Massive thanks to Tetra for gifting me this 80L starter aquarium for the build.
