The Waco Suspension Bridge is a true Texas treasure—both historically and architecturally. Built in 1870, it was the first bridge to span the Brazos River and the longest single-span suspension bridge west of the Mississippi at the time. Its cables were supplied by the same company that built the Brooklyn Bridge: John A. Roebling Co..
Here’s what makes it special:
Historic Significance: Before the bridge, crossing the Brazos was done by ferry—a risky and slow process. The bridge revolutionized travel and commerce, especially for cattle drives along the Chisholm Trail.
Engineering Feat: It contains nearly 3 million locally made bricks, and its 475-foot span was a marvel in its day.
Community Landmark: Today, it’s a pedestrian-only bridge, linking Indian Spring Park and Doris D. Miller Park. It’s a centerpiece for events like Independence Day fireworks and Brazos Nights concerts.
Art & Culture: The area features the “Branding the Brazos” sculptures—life-size bronze longhorns and a trail boss that honor Waco’s cattle-driving past.
Riverwalk Connection: The bridge is part of the scenic Waco Riverwalk, a multi-use trail that winds along the Brazos and connects Baylor University to Cameron Park.
If you’re ever in Waco, it’s worth a stroll—not just for the views, but for the stories it holds.
