The Copper Boom bolstered the population in the Keweenaw Peninsula from the middle of the 19th century, and rail travel was the primary mode of transportation for many immigrants coming to work in the mines. A series of depots were built to service the Mineral Range Railroad, with the structure still in Calumet being built in 1908. The Mineral Range faltered, but passenger service was still in use until 1968, and freight lasted until 1978. For a time, the rail near the Depot was used by the Copper Range #29 Steam Locomotive. The Mineral Range Depot’s ownership has bounced around since, with the current owners working to reopen it as a space the community can utilize.
