Biber’s Rosary Sonatas and Corelli’s Folia | Sepec, Perl, Santana & Behringer · MarchVivo

Admiration is, according to Descartes, a primary passion that arises when observing something rare, extraordinary, unexpected, or surprising. The virtuosic repertoire of the Baroque, laden with stravaganza, is one of the most suitable vehicles for arousing this indescribable amazement in the listener. This is particularly true of Corelli's Sonatas Op. 5 (a model of virtuosity throughout the 18th century) and Biber's Rosary Sonatas (a collection that was little circulated in its day and which brings together secular and religious elements in equal measure).
