Withey Hill Road (UK) - Viewer Request: Driving Past Their Childhood Home. Read Description for More

TODAYS VIDEO:
A viewer mentioned we had driven past the road where he had lived as a child. His family emigrated from the UK to Australia quite a few years ago, so he couldn’t believe it when he came across one of the DrivingBritain virtual tour videos, covering the area he had grown up in. Unfortunately, however, his luck didn’t last – we drove straight past the road where he had lived! Naturally, he was hoping we would drive down the road where he had lived and played as a kid, and he would be able to catch a glimpse of his childhood home – wouldn’t that have been fantastic!

Thankfully, he reached out via the Comments Section and told me his story. I explained that I wouldn't be back in that area for a while (quite a while, as it turned out!), but as soon as I was, I promised I would film down his road and he would hopefully be able to see his childhood home.

Today, that promise was finally fulfilled! (I really hope his house is still there!)



To make sure he has plenty of time to not only look for his house, but also look around the area, and take it all in, I began the drive just before peak traffic. No one likes traffic, but it does have the bonus of allowing you to drive a lot slower than normal! Like most places, the traffic never drops to the point where you can just trundle along, so this was the next best thing.

The drive covers a circle around his childhood area, but because parts were covered in the original video, which featured a place called Walmley, the drive was expanded to also include the areas of Mere Green and Sutton Coldfield. All three areas are in the West Midlands, UK (pretty much in the centre of England).

Realistic Limitations:
To keep it viable, I’ve stuck a pin in the centre of England, working outwards, because a lot of ground can be covered, whilst still being kind to the thirsty miles! The channel is completely self-funded, and has no income – no YouTube money, no sponsors - no streams of income whatsoever. What most from outside of the UK probably don’t realise, is that in the UK is very expensive, especially for drivers. Car road tax is extortionate, car insurance premiums are through the roof, and fuel costs more than the Saturn V space rocket, and that went to the moon! (If you used to live on the moon, I’m sorry, but no - you’ll have to use a telescope! ;-)

Running a driving channel / virtual tour channel is expensive. Predictably, those high costs significantly limit the amount of driving tours I can film, the locations I can reach, and the equipment I use. On top of cameras, high-speed SD cards and needing a super-fast internet connection with no data limits (some videos are hundreds of GB’s in size), my computer remembers, through first-hand experience, when the tyrannosaurus rex used to roam the earth, I have to use more TB storage devices than I have followers, and my video editing program keeps telling me how good it is, because it’s Windows XP compatible! That’s right – nothing but the newest tech used here – well, it must have been new sometime or other! On top of all that goodness, if locations are far apart, I have to pay for food and accommodation, because I’m longer than the car, the carpet mats aren’t very tasty, and petrol has a funny taste! So, all in all, whilst I’d love to be able to include every request, I have to be realistic. Which ones will be included – hopefully all of them, just not all at the same time or perhaps even in the same year. But, even though it may take longer than any of us would like, I will do my best to include everyone who asks!
