The Cathedral’s much-loved organ has been through a remarkable journey of restoration. In 2024 it was carefully dismantled and transported to Harrison and Harrison’s workshop in Durham, where a year of skilled craftsmanship brought renewal to its 3,838 pipes, from the smallest measuring just 10 millimetres to the largest at 9.7 metres in length.
This once-in-a-generation project has only been possible through the extraordinary generosity of funders, supporters, musicians, and the Cathedral community. The organ has now returned, though it will take time for the instrument to settle and for its sound to find full strength again within the building.
The rededication service will take place on 21 September 2025 and will mark the beginning of a year-long celebration of its return. From May 2026 a programme of concerts, talks and community events will invite organ enthusiasts, music lovers and new audiences to experience the Cathedral organ in fresh and inspiring ways.
