「八朔」とは、旧暦8月1日（現在の8月下旬～9月初旬頃）を指す言葉で、元々は農民が初穂を田の神に供えたり、日頃お世話になっている人に贈ったりする風習がありました。
京都祇園では芸妓・舞妓さんたちが日頃お世話になっているお茶屋や師匠、芸事の先生のもとを訪ねて「ご挨拶まいり」をします。
黒紋付きの正装を着た芸舞妓さんたちが祇園の街を歩く光景は、まさに京都の夏の風物詩です。
「ご機嫌さんどす」「ようおたのもうします」などの丁寧な挨拶が交わされ、格式ある京都文化が感じられます。
朝から夕方まで、祇園の街角で芸舞妓さんに出会える数少ない日です。
祇園の八朔は、感謝と礼儀の心を表す日。特に芸舞妓さんにとっては、日頃支えてくれる方々への「お礼参り」として重要な節目です。観光的なイベントではなく、伝統を重んじる内面的な行事として大切にされています。

Hassaku refers to the first day of the eighth month in the old lunar calendar, which now falls around late August to early September. Traditionally, it was a day when farmers offered the season’s first rice harvest to the god of the fields and presented gifts to those they were indebted to throughout the year.

In Kyoto’s Gion district, geiko and maiko (traditional female entertainers) pay visits to teahouses, their mentors, and teachers of performing arts on this day to express their gratitude—an act known as go-aisatsu mairi (formal greetings).

Dressed in formal black kimono adorned with family crests, they walk gracefully through the streets of Gion—a captivating summer tradition unique to Kyoto. Phrases such as “Gokigen-san dosu” (“Wishing you well”) and “Yō otanomō shimasu” (“Thank you for your continued support”) are exchanged, reflecting the refined elegance of Kyoto’s cultural etiquette.

Hassaku offers one of the rare chances to encounter maiko and geiko on the streets from morning until evening.

In Gion, Hassaku is a day that symbolizes gratitude and respect. For geiko and maiko in particular, it’s a deeply meaningful occasion—a time to thank those who support their careers. Rather than being a tourist event, it is cherished as an intimate tradition that honors Kyoto’s cultural spirit.
