Wheels, barricades, shafts of some crumbled chariots, fragments of these natures scattered all over the battlefield like a bunch of mummified beaks of some magnificent birds -- those heralds of war always ended up getting killed the first. Such a battlefield, where the only sign of any close-to-sentient movements were those occasional swings of that desolate, soundless sandstorm, here, there, only those swings remained, while that previous mingling mass of those countless howling cries and mutters (with such a sense of collective honor, all of them) had long died down; a piece of shoulder armor dangling over the protruding part of an unrecognizable flagpole that had been shattered in half, almost as if it had been placed by its then-had-vanished original owner, some soldier without a name of his own before he threw himself into that killing field right in front of him --- one of many nameless machines constituted of nothing but iron-like muscles and disciplines. An endless battle within such a horrendous yet formless arena that is forever trapped in some ancient tales of an island nation, an arena whose every single brick and other decoration that does not need to be specified, were all but built out of sheer sounds, violent sounds, sounds of pure rage and velocity, an infinitely repeated battle it is, nameless machines of a strange yet tragic nobility, swift victory, cycle, defeat, cycle, all over again, amidst them all, none, not a single soldier, had abandoned his shield.
Much more can be said about the sonic magnitude of Ἡ εἰκών, a short but nonetheless demanding (for its audience) debut EP of Ὁπλίτης (Hoplites). When we discovered this fantastic avant-garde black/death project on the internet somewhere near the end of 2021, we were absolutely baffled, especially since this project claimed to be from China. After some initial contacts, it turned out to be a side project of one promising and prolific artist from the Mainland underground. In terms of Ὁπλίτης's music, it's easy to pick up influences from bands such as DSO, Serpent Column, or Plebian Grandstand, who have collectively perfected the notion and structure of modern avant-garde black metal with a mixture of mathcore/power-violence. Yet, Ὁπλίτης manages to maintain a sense of originality and freshness (albeit still at a rudimentary level), making it one of those milestone releases in the history and development of Chinese Black Metal without a doubt.
