Online Book Release: "An Introduction to Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy", (Lied, 2025)

This is a recording of the online release party for the book "An Introduction to Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy: Foundations for Clinical Practic"e, written by Jon Anders Lied and published by Routledge in 2025.

The event was hosted by former IEDTA president, ISTDP therapist, and supervisor Tami Chelew. Unfortunately, due to a technical error, she does not appear on video in the recording.

In this recording, Jon Anders Lied discusses the inspiration behind the book as well as the challenges learners face when engaging with this complex, yet highly rewarding, therapy model.

Background to the book and event by Jon Anders Lied:

​When I first started learning ISTDP, I felt both inspired and overwhelmed. The method was powerful and rewarding, but also complex and, at times, confusing.

​Just as I began to feel a bit more confident, a big debate about ISTDP erupted in Norway. The method was sometimes described as harsh, mechanical, or even cold. Stories about ruptures and misalliances were everywhere, and I often met supervisees who spoke about a version of ISTDP that I didn’t quite recognize — one that seemed to have lost its warmth, humanity, and psychodynamic depth.

​But the ISTDP I had come to love was something else entirely. To me, it was deeply human, compassionate, and relational, grounded in psychodynamic theory and practice.

​Out of those experiences and questions came my Norwegian book Innføring i intensiv psykodynamisk korttidsterapi (ISTDP). I wrote it because I missed an introduction that welcomed new readers rather than scaring them off, and that could show how technique, theory, and humanity belong together.
