Ikuma Dan [團伊玖磨] (1924~2001, Japan)
旅上
Journey
poem by Sakutaro Hagiwara [萩原朔太郎] (1886~1942, Japan)
translated by D. Guyver Britton & Yukinobu Kagiya from SJK-1030/1 "Kyoko Ito sings Collection Songs of Ikuma Dan" booklet
[I'd go to France! I would go to France. Had I but the chance.]
[A lack a day! 'Tis much too far away!]
[So let me, then, put on a new sui and go just where I please!]
[I'll buy a new suit, a new suit, and go where I please!]
[And as we wind up through the forest trees,]
[As the train climbs the steep pass, the steep mountain pass,]
[All alone, my head against the window of the train,]
[I shall think of all those happy times again.]
[I shall think happy thoughts like shoots of green grass That spring up at dawn after rain.]
Eiko Maenaka [前中榮子], soprano
Chiharu Hanaoka [花岡千春], piano
Recorded: March 17 & 18, 2004 at Mitaka City Arts Center, Tokyo
This piece was composed in 1951 and first performed by Harue Miyake. The lyrics were written by Sakutaro Hagiwara. There is a tendency to approach the pentatonic scale, and changes are also seen in the rhythmic aspect. The accompaniment around "kisha ga yamamichi o yuku toki (And as we wind up through the forest trees)" is also charming.
by Naomi Monma from SJK-1030/1 "Kyoko Ito sings Collection Songs of Ikuma Dan" booklet
