To hunt, to film, and to call a bull elk solo on public land is by far one of the hardest things to do. Tom Schneider (pro staff of Stuck N the Rut) is in pursuit of a mature bull elk. Travis shot his bull for the year, and now it's Tom's turn. The day before this hunt, we were hunting close to this general area. By the end of the day, we heard a bull bugling what looked to be a thick, brushy basin, but didn't see a good way to get down there. "After the elk hunt was over for the day, I did a little bit of research on google earth and found out that I can get into the basin from the bottom on a hiking trail. I got up extra early and made it to the spot that I expected to start hiking. My goal was to hike at least four miles in the dark to get where we heard the bull last the previous night. I started up the trail that follows up a creek bottom. As I go around the first bend in the dark, the sound of a herd bull screamed right in front of me. I backed off a little bit so the bull wouldn't smell me. I waited until the sun raised. As soon as I was able to see my pins, I went after the bull. I set up and cow called. No response. I bugled, and he answered back, but farther away. The closer I tried to get, the farther he wanted to get from me. He was a herd bull. He crossed the creek onto the other side of the drainage. As he moved over there. He would bugle once every ten minutes. I knew what I needed to do, and that was to sneak in silent. Long story short, I crossed the creek and got in his territory. As I got closer, I can hear twigs snapping ahead of me and also hear the faint sound of cow calls. I cow called back to hide my other noises, and got even closer. Finally, I heard the bull bugle. I knew I was close, but I needed a place to setup. I walked around a little bit in an old/thick clear cut. I finally found the best spot possible, and I bugled and instantly started to rake a blow down tree with my foot (my hands were full). Bull bugled back, and I cut him off with another bugle to make him mad. As I listened, I heard the snapping of sticks getting louder and louder. I put the bugle between my legs and got ready. I started seeing yellow in the brush, so I pulled back. The rest is on the video." The elk has a 6x6 frame, but has two extra score-able points, making it a 6x8. The way this hunt was filmed was by a head camera setup made by solvid. Just set a handy cam HD made by SONY on the headstrap. Works way better than a gopro because there is no fish eye lense, and the gopros usually make the animal look farther away than they already are.
