As winter tightens its grip on the Netherlands, our journey along the Dutch canals takes an unexpected and deeply personal turn.
In this episode, we continue cruising toward Gouda through snow-covered canals, lifting bridges and another winter lock — only to discover that Gouda’s inner city is closed to boats for the season. Forced to tie up beside a working barge just outside town, the pace slows and reflection sets in.
From there, we leave Awanui NZ behind and travel by train to Apeldoorn to visit family — including a very sick relative. Along the way, we reflect on Fiona’s parents growing up in occupied Holland during the Second World War, and the history of a railway station bombed during the conflict, where lives — including nurses — were lost.
With temperatures forecast to plunge to -8°C, this episode is about more than boating. It’s about family, memory, history, and what it means to keep moving forward — even when winter closes in.
Join us as we continue learning what life aboard a Nordhavn trawler is really like in a Northern European winter.
