Our April guest for our Spinning Yarns Speaker Series as Anna Hunter of Long Way Homestead.
Anna Hunter is a first-generation sheep farmer and wool mill owner in Eastern Manitoba, Treaty One Territory. She moved to Manitoba to start a sheep farm, raising Shetland sheep for their wool. Finding that the area was lacking in mills, she also opened a small-scale wool processing mill, Long Way Homestead.
Anna has become a strong advocate for Canadian wool and has been working towards growing the industry by pushing for more effective infrastructure. She strives to build a stronger and more resilient industry and works to facilitate connections among the wool value chain. As a proponent of regenerative agriculture and climate-beneficial food and clothing, she also supports other farmers in adopting these practices.
She has recently released a book, Sheep, Shepherd and Land. In this book Anna documented small-scale sheep farmers across Canada, highlighting the wide range of sheep breeds across Canada’s broad and diverse landscape. It delves into the unique properties and characteristics of the wool grown by these different breeds of sheep. Over the spring Anna will also be releasing From Sheep to Hand, an e-book of knitting patterns.
Anna speaks about her new books Sheep, Shepherd and Land, From Sheep to Hand, her work in advancing the Canadian wool industry and improving its infrastructure, and her vision for its future.
