Homemade Concrete Mix Ratio

A good homemade concrete mix design, or recipe, is also one of the most common – one part Portland cement, two parts sand, and four parts gravel. These ratios will give you bulk of yield as well as a very strong finished concrete product. You do not need to use engineering-level specifications when mixing your own concrete to take on projects around the house as a handy do-it-yourself type person.

The best thing to keep in mind when making your own concrete are the ratios. 1-2-4. Whether you measure with a spoon, a shovel, or a bucket, the mix ratio would be one scoop of cement with the spoon or shovel, two scoops of sand with the same spoon or shovel or whatever, and four of the same scoops of gravel. For a good homemade concrete mix, stick to the ratios and you will have a reliable concrete mix for a strong concrete finish.

You could improve your homemade mix design with one or a few common concrete admixtures. One of these is an acrylic fortifier that replaces 10% of the water content of the mix to improve characteristics of the finished concrete like water resistance and overall strength. Acrylic fortifier is a readily available concrete admixture found in many hardware and building supply stores.

To save some money, you can replace this more expensive concrete additive with regular acrylic or latex paint. Leftover paint can be used as a 1:1 replacement, as long as it is not spoiled. It provides the same basic properties as a concrete acrylic fortifier, but know that it can also add some of that paint color to the finished concrete. Using a colored paint really should not add too much, if any, color with the ratio used in this mix. So be aware that colored paint could add some color to the finished concrete.
