How to Make a High Voltage Jacob’s Ladder – DIY & Explained
Watch any classic Frankenstein movie, and you're sure to see a Jacob's Ladder buzzing away in the background! In this video, I’ll show you how a Jacob’s Ladder works and how to safely build one yourself using a neon sign transformer.
What You’ll Learn in This Video:
✅ The basic science behind a Jacob’s Ladder (plasma arcs & ionization)
✅ The key components you need to build one (voltage, electrodes, spacing)
✅ Step-by-step build process using copper wire & a neon transformer
✅ Safety precautions when working with high voltage electricity
✅ Why a Neon Sign Transformer is a better choice than a Microwave Oven Transformer
⚠️ Warning: This project involves high-voltage electricity (7500V+). Do NOT attempt unless you have experience with electrical safety.
🛠 Materials Used:
🔹 12-gauge copper wire (can also use a metal coat hanger)
🔹 Neon sign transformer (7500V, 30mA)
🔹 Non-conductive base (wood)
🔹 Copper terminal lugs, bolts, and washers
Why a Neon Sign Transformer?
✔️ Higher voltage makes it easier to sustain an arc
✔️ Lower current (30mA) makes it safer than a microwave oven transformer
Final Thoughts:
Once your Jacob's Ladder is set up, always make sure your workspace is dry, controlled, and stable. Never touch the electrodes while powered. Disconnect from mains power before making any adjustments!
