Charles Martel (c. 688 – 741) was a Frankish statesman and military leader who served as Mayor of the Palace and de facto ruler of the Frankish kingdoms. He is most famous for his pivotal role in the Battle of Tours in 732, where he led a vastly outnumbered Frankish force to a decisive victory over the invading Umayyad Muslim army from al-Andalus. This battle is often credited with halting the northward expansion of Islam into Western Europe and preserving Christianity in the region.
Known as “The Hammer,” Martel was a brilliant strategist and organizer who laid the foundations for a unified Frankish realm. He reformed the military, strengthening the use of cavalry, and expanded Frankish power throughout Gaul. Though he never held the title of king, his authority was unmatched during his lifetime.
Charles Martel was the grandfather of Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor, and the father of Pepin the Short, who became King of the Franks. Through his military victories and political reforms, Charles set the stage for the Carolingian Empire and the Christian revival that would define medieval Europe
