Gem Pier, Williamstown: A Historic Waterfront Gem
Gem Pier is an iconic historic pier located on Port Phillip Bay in Williamstown, a charming bayside suburb just 10 km southwest of Melbourne's CBD in Victoria, Australia. At 145 meters long, it's a key landmark blending maritime heritage, modern attractions, and stunning views of the city skyline. It's easily accessible by train (Williamstown Station is a short walk away), ferry, or car, and serves as a hub for locals and tourists alike. Address: 1 Syme Street, Williamstown VIC 3016.
A Bit of History
Built in 1839 as one of Melbourne's earliest jetties (originally called "The Jetty"), it played a vital role in early colonial shipping and ferry services. Renamed "Old Pier" in 1853 after the "New Pier" (now Ann Street Pier) opened, it later became "Steamboat Pier" in the 1860s–70s. Its current name honors the paddle steamer Gem, which ferried passengers between Williamstown and Port Melbourne from 1846 to 1886. The pier was rebuilt in 1992 to preserve its heritage while accommodating modern use. Williamstown itself, settled in 1837, was named after King William IV and was once a vital port before the Yarra River's development.
Fun fact: In 1925, a 96-year-old Crimean War veteran born on a ship in the English Channel worked as the pier's nightwatchman into his 90s—talk about seafaring dedication!
