Greece is undergoing a significant transport overhaul, and the first step begins in Piraeus!
The government is taking action to modernize Athens' public transport system, starting with the removal of trolleybus overhead wiring. Crews are tackling the dense cable clusters along Akti Miaouli, a coastal area notorious for traffic congestion.
This project marks the initial phase of a broader plan to enhance Athens' transportation network. Approximately 70% of the capital's trolleybus network will be transformed, with cables remaining only on major roads to support key routes.
Despite the changes, services will continue, utilizing electric or conventional buses. Routes 16, 17, and 20 in central Piraeus have already begun the transition, with buses running alongside trolleybuses before the full deactivation of the wire network.
Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis highlights the benefits of this shift, promising more frequent services and lower operating costs.
Stay tuned for more updates on Athens' transport revolution!
