After securing the Normandy beachheads in June 1944, the Allies pushed inland into France.
To the east, the British and Canadians became bogged down in intense battles against several Panzer divisions near their main objective, the city of Caen.
To the west, U.S. forces encountered the dense, heavily defended Normandy Bocage, leading to what became known as the “Battle of the Hedgerows.”
In true American ingenuity, a simple yet effective device was developed to cut through the thick hedgerows, restoring mobility to the advancing forces.
