How to make and size picture frames ! Hand and Power Tool Builds. Gifts you can make.

This video describes a project every woodworker can make as a gift - picture frames. One challenge for picture frames is how to size the frame pieces. I provide an easy way to determine the size of each frame piece from the picture size, rabbet width, and frame width. This easy guide is then applied to demonstrate making picture frames using both power tools and hand tools. A rabbet plane and hand saw miter box are used as the primary hand tools; a table saw and power miter saw are used as the primary power tools. I also discuss improving the fit of the miters using a shooting plane along with different methods of joining the miter frame pieces. Finally, I discuss completing the picture frame with glass or other clear inserts, inserting a backer board, and using a tool to install pins in hardwood frames to hold the backer board and picture in place.
